Dark Light

About the Artist.

Hello, my name is Rustem Gomes (rustenico), I’m a Brazilian illustrator and visual artist  based in Rio de Janeiro. I have a degree in Fine Arts from School of Fine Arts at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

In 2019, I started a painting project of exploration, research and production that blends elements of classical painting with references to virtual environments and video games.

My artistic connection to the digital world reflects on the emptiness of spaces and the construction of reality. It is a process in which virtual settings from video games are reinterpreted and materialized into the physical realm through traditional painting.

The emphasis on empty aesthetics environments and  solitude is intentional, as it creates a new visual proposal and also allows for reflection on the meaning of these spaces, prompting the viewer to consider narrative and space. This fusion reflects a critical and nostalgic view of digital culture, addressing themes such as memory and the impact of virtual worlds on contemporary life.

I love to explore games scenarios that in some way, are connected to the technological nostalgia of my childhood from 90’s and early 2000’s. Like my all-time favorite games: Half-Life 1 and 2, and Counter-Strike for example. I believe that sharing the same memories is what connects my work with the audience.

Hey, Don’t be a stranger, say Hi on my socials!
